Lives and works in Paris and Pantin.
Currently in residence: at the Picasso Museum in Antibes; and at the Paul Bert elementary school in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande as part of the "Creation in progress" program of the Ateliers Médicis.
Born in 1990 in Prague, Tereza Lochmann trained at the age of 15 intensively in all artistic techniques at the Lycée des Arts Plastiques Vaclav Hollar (famous engraver of the 17th century in Europe). She particularly developed her taste for engraving.
She then entered the Higher School of Applied Arts in Prague (UMPRUM), but the academic education provided there put her off. She decides to come to Paris, first on the occasion of an Erasmus stay at ENSAD, then at ENSBA where her choice to exhibit her large "matrices" will be somewhat debated.
Since her arrival in France in 2014, she has multiplied collaborations of all kinds both for exhibitions and for the publication of her sketchbooks.
She also begins her “wild” interventions in the public space.
In 2018, she left for several months in residence in the Philippines. The same year, his work was spotted by the jury of the Bourse Révélations Emerige and was exhibited in the Villa of the same name. In 2019, she received an AIMS scholarship (Artist Intervening in Schools, ENSBA / E. De Rotshchild Foundation) during which her pleasure in "co-creation" was confirmed.
Having devoted her end-of-study dissertation to art brut, she continues to maintain links with artists and actors in this field. In 2019, she joined Georges Widener in his studio in South Carolina for several weeks.
His collaboration with the Kaléidoscope gallery, which now accompanies him, materializes for the first time during the exhibition Rose - Seven painters from 1960 to the present day (Color as cultural construction, February 2020).
Artistic practice
Tereza Lochmann's works are the result of a unique process of combining engraving/sculpture, painting, collage and drawing.
His work in particular diverts the classic practice of engraving to make it an experimental and living contemporary medium. Thus, his large woodcuts go beyond their utilitarian function of "matrices" to become "reliefs" and be exhibited to the public.
For her, the notions of “recovery” and “assembly” mark her processes as much as her approach.
Using discarded wood, unused notebooks or old maps, she reveals the experience and combines it with her own memories.
She is also inspired by fragments of legends, collected images, snippets of experiences seen or lived, to build singular narrative forms, in touch with the most burning news. His version of the medieval legend of Lady Godiva, produced at the end of 2019, features a quasi-femen fighting against rising taxes.
If her imagination draws on many literary, poetic, cinematographic and pictorial references, she is also interested in raw art, seeking to draw inspiration from the spontaneity and freedom specific to creators far from all academicism and all fashions. .
The idea of "encounter" - literally and figuratively - is also one of its driving forces.
Between the learned and the popular, between humor and seriousness, between game and effort, between confirmed technical mastery and an assumed notion of “imperfection”. Tereza Lochmann's work is high in contrast, hence its strength.
