JACQUES GRINBERG / MAO TO LAI / MARYAN (PINCHAS BURSTEIN) : HERE

Born in 1927 in Novy-Sacz, Poland, under the name Pinchas Burstein, Maryan (Maryan S. Maryan) experienced the horrors of various ghettos, labor camps, and concentration camps throughout his adolescence. At the age of 18, he emerged from these experiences, having lost a leg, without family, and without resources.

In 1947, he went to Palestine on the advice of a Jewish Agency official. Upon arrival, considered disabled, he found himself in a place for elderly migrants. Through courage and perseverance, he managed to enroll in the Bezalel School of Arts. He immersed himself in painting and began to gain recognition.

In 1950, he moved to Paris, where he signed and became known as MARYAN. In addition to his painting, Maryan embarked on significant graphic and lithographic work. Galleries gradually took an interest in his work, and from the late 1950s, several of them represented him over the years. He is considered one of the pioneers of the Nouvelle figuration.

In 1962, he decided to move to the United States (where he became known as Maryan S. Maryan). He continued to return to Paris regularly. He passed away suddenly in 1977.

EXPOSITIONS

During his lifetime, MARYAN (Maryan S. Maryan) enjoyed numerous solo exhibitions in European and American galleries, including Galerie de France, Galerie Claude Bernard, Galerie Nova Spectra, Galerie Allan Frumkin, Galerie Benador, and more.

He also participated in various group exhibitions in museums, including MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), the Guggenheim Museum, San Francisco Museum, Carnegie Museum, Whitney Museum, Indianapolis Museum, Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Ghent Museum, Musée Rath, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes et Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tourcoing, Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, and others.

His work is part of significant public collections in Europe, the United States, and Israel.

Over the past decade, various initiatives aimed at recognizing the importance of his painting and showcasing it to the general public have been undertaken, leading to major exhibitions at the Spertus Museum in Chicago and at the Museum of Art and History of Judaism of Paris.
